🎙What is podcast hosting? And how does it work? (01:07)
There’s a misconception that Apple Podcasts or Spotify host your audio files. That's not true - these are just podcast directories that serve as listings for new listeners to find podcasts.
Your podcast is actually hosted by a podcast hosting company like Buzzsprout. The podcast host is what distributes your podcast to all the podcast directories and your podcast listeners.
Buzzsprout does this by creating something called an RSS Feed. It's basically just a fancy way of saying a text-only webpage that all podcast apps know how to read. It tells people your podcast website URL, podcast titles, and links to each of your audio files.
When you’re first getting started, you'll make a one-time submission to podcast directories like Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Spotify to get your podcast listed. After that, Buzzsprout will keep talking to the directories and letting them know each time you come out with a new episode.
The directories will also check the RSS feed to see if there is a new episode about once a day. So if you’re experiencing between you releasing a new episode and when it shows up, that’s why. Don’t worry! Your listeners aren’t affected at all by the delay.
Whenever one of your podcast listeners opens the app on their phone, the app checks to see if there is a new episode of your podcast and, if there is, downloads it directly to their phone. So your podcast subscribers are getting files directly from your podcast host and aren’t affected by the delay.
🎧Where should I publish my podcast? Or what platforms should I be on? (03:44)
Being listed in podcast directories is the best way to market your podcast and find new listeners.
Start by submitting your podcast to the “Big 3” - Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Spotify.
After that, you should consider getting into Deezer, Stitcher, TuneIn (Amazon Alexa), Google Play Music, Pandora, Listen Notes, and iHeart Radio.
You don't have to start with all of these, but once you do, it will be helpful to spread the word. On Buzzsprout, we'll make it easy for you to submit your podcast to each of these directories.
💰How much does podcast hosting cost? (07:28)
Different podcast hosts charge different amounts based on things like storage space, bandwidth, hours of audio you upload each month, whether you want basic stats or detailed analytics, etc.
At Buzzsprout, we recommend everybody start on our free plan. Then once you've uploaded a handful of episodes, you can upgrade to a paid plan.
It's fair to say the typical podcaster pays about $12/month. You can expect to pay a bit less if you go with a bare-bones plan with another provider.
🤔How to choose a podcast hosting platform (08:56)
You want to find a quality podcast host that will make your life easier by providing the tools and features you need to succeed without nickel and diming you for every add-on.
Here are the five things your podcast host should offer in their base package:
1. Podcast website on your own domain
2. Customizable embed players
3. Ability to share to social media
4. Advanced analytics
5. Easy directory submission process
Not to mention, your podcast host should be effortless to use. You're going to be uploading new episodes regularly, so you want to remove as many technical hurdles as possible. You don't have to spend your time deciphering things like ID3 tags, accepted file extensions, and optional settings that don't help you grow your podcast.

Just awesome!!!!
ReplyDeleteCan I make a podcasts in mobile? How?
ReplyDeleteThanks Buzzsprout, really useful and cool video. I'm still struggling with a question: is it possible to limit the availability of your podcast to some countries? Maybe via the RSS feed you mention?
ReplyDeleteLoved it, answered many of my questions so thank ewe :-) Currently have the free plan as we've only finalised one episode and awaiting cover art. Google Podcasts not available to free plan, is it included in the 12$ plan? Also, no mention of Soundcloud? Are they not a big player? Maybe more so in the UK?
ReplyDeleteQuick question: Is the episode that you submit to Apple podcasts permanently there? If you submit your first episode but, before publishing, realize that there is something in the episode that needs to be edited, is it possible to take it down and re-upload even after being approved by Apple?
ReplyDeleteCan we write and earn money on this?

ReplyDeleteThanks, this is super helpful! Just to be clear - if I upload some podcasts to Buzzsprout with the free plan, and don’t upgrade, then my podcast will be taken down from the directories after the 90 day window, correct?

ReplyDeleteAmazing video. Thank you for simplifying the process. Really appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteI am a research kind of guy so I spent a lot of time looking at podcast hosts. Once I looked at them all it was a no-brainer. I have no regrets going with Buzzsprout.
ReplyDeleteAwesome job!
ReplyDeleteNice and clear message! Thank you!! Quick question, can I submit my RSS feed, created by buzzsprout, to other directories like castbox?
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for this easy to understand process about podcasting!
ReplyDeleteIt tooks aprroximately just 10 minutes to put the podcasting process into context.
The message is clear: Don't use a lot of leisure time to produce a (hopefully) good podcast if your hosting cannot deliver what it takes to serve your future podcasting ambitions.
Although this is a promotional video, I seriously still will be considering Buzzsprout as my future hosting.
Thanks again! 👌
